Knowledge Base

Aerospace PCB Manufacturing FAQs

Find answers to common questions about AS9100D compliance, IPC Class III standards, ITAR registration, and manufacturing mission-critical flight hardware.

01. What quality certifications do you hold for aerospace manufacturing?

Altest Corporation is fully AS9100D and ISO 9001:2015 certified. AS9100D is the stringent quality management standard specifically required by the aviation, space, and defense industries to ensure the absolute reliability and safety of manufactured products.

02. What is IPC Class III and is it required for aerospace PCBs?

IPC Class III is the highest performance standard for printed circuit boards, demanding continuous high performance or performance on demand in life-critical or flight-critical applications. Yes, aerospace applications almost universally require IPC Class III manufacturing, which mandates stricter tolerances for drill breakouts, plating thickness, and solder joint perfection.

03. What is ITAR registration and why does it matter?

ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations) is a United States regulatory regime that restricts the export of defense and space-related articles and technical data. Altest is fully ITAR registered, guaranteeing that all sensitive aerospace manufacturing, CAD files, and intellectual property remain securely within the USA at our Silicon Valley facility.

04. What materials are best suited for aerospace and satellite PCBs?

Aerospace hardware must survive extreme temperature fluctuations, radiation, and outgassing. We utilize highly specialized, dimensionally stable materials such as Polyimide, extreme High-Tg FR-4 (like Isola 370HR), and low-loss RF materials (like Rogers RO4000 series) for radar and communications arrays.

05. How do you protect aerospace PCBAs from harsh environments?

To protect mission-critical assemblies from condensation, salt fog, dust, and corrosive gases, we apply specialized conformal coatings (acrylic, polyurethane, or silicone). For components subjected to extreme mechanical vibration or G-forces during launch, we apply ruggedized underfill and epoxy potting compounds.

06. Do you support Rigid-Flex designs for aviation applications?

Yes. Rigid-Flex PCBs are highly popular in aerospace because they eliminate heavy wire harnesses and mechanical connectors, drastically reducing the overall weight and saving critical volumetric space in avionics bays. They also eliminate point-of-failure risks caused by connector vibration during flight.

07. How do you mitigate the risk of counterfeit components?

Counterfeit components pose a catastrophic risk to aerospace hardware. Our incoming inspection lab adheres to the stringent SAE AS6081 standard. We utilize destructive decapsulation, X-ray inspection, XRF elemental analysis, and electrical curve tracer testing to verify the 100% authenticity of components before they ever reach the assembly floor.

08. How do you ensure the reliability of hidden solder joints like BGAs?

Visual inspection is insufficient for aerospace requirements. We perform 100% 3D Automated X-Ray Inspection (AXI) on all flight-critical hardware. This allows us to look inside the solder joints of BGAs and QFNs to ensure precise volumetric mass and mathematically verify the absence of structural voids or bridging.

09. What level of traceability and documentation do you provide?

We provide absolute, end-to-end traceability down to the component lot code. Deliverables typically include comprehensive First Article Inspection (FAI) reports (AS9102), Certificates of Conformance (C of C), material declarations, cross-section microsection reports, and logged thermal profiles for all reflowed assemblies.

10. Can you handle both NPI prototyping and volume production?

Yes. We specialize in seamless transitions from New Product Introduction (NPI) prototypes directly into full-scale production. Because we use the exact same state-of-the-art robotic assembly lines and inspection criteria for both prototypes and production runs, there is zero drop-off in aerospace-grade quality as your volumes scale up.
